INTRODUCing the pilot program

Addiction impacts 20% of families in the United States and reoccurrence rates within families is very high. Through high reoccurrence, addiction spreads exponentially and has wide ranging social impact. Family treatment programs garner the minority of focus in the recovery community. We believe that the curve of the spread of addiction can be flattened in our society by establishing a volunteer led peer network to build community, provide therapy and education for young adults and families impacted by addiction.

We have partnered with The Steve Hicks School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin to develop and launch The Texas CARES Program, an entrepreneurial solution to one of our greatest social issues. We are funding a grant of $500 thousand for a three-year pilot program with The University of Texas and Cornerstone Church ATX www.ccatx.com. The program will be initially launched in the Fall of 2023 as Cornerstone CARES. Ultimately, our vision is to launch the program in other churches and groups nationally.

THE SPREAD OF ADDICTION IN FAMILIES

  • Addiction is a disease that often passes down through generations. We believe that by establishing a program to treat teens and young adults that have grown up with addiction in their families that we may be able to break the chain and slow the spread of the disease.

  • Building a scalable volunteer lead program that can be delivered through churches, companies, or other groups with an interest in volunteerism will raise awareness in our communities about addiction that can lead to a sustainable source of long-term funding for solutions.
  • Our goal is to partner with other providers (Clean Cause Foundation, Austin Recovery Network, The University of Texas) to help design our program and offer a continuum of services for the treatment of addiction and support of families that are impacted.

THE CARES PROGRAM

Our goal is to develop a turnkey program to train volunteers on the delivery of The CARES Program. Empowering volunteer groups solves the challenges of reaching large numbers of people through our peer network but also helps spread the The CARES Program, the challenges of addiction in our society and the impact it has on young people and families. Empowering volunteer groups creates a community solution and can help grow awareness exponentially. This will ultimately help endow the program by creating a community of supporters who are passionate about helping solve this problem in our society.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

  • The CARES Program enables SHS students and faculty to work with religious communities and their leadership to provide supportive counseling and other services for families and individuals affected by substance misuse. The program provides financial support for student interns, an SHS faculty member who provides training and supervision, and programming costs. Possibilities exist as well for the SHS to conduct research and program evaluation related to the CARES program.

  • 2 students begin placements in Fall 2023 at Cornerstone Church, Austin, with the goal to build capacity for scaling the program to involve additional students and congregations as early as the academic year 2023-2024.

  • Initial Phase (Three-year Pilot)

  • CARES will be piloted for three years, during which time it will be assessed for its efficacy and continuing scalability.

  • A new clinical faculty member will be hired in spring 2023 and will supervise two students placed at Cornerstone Church beginning in fall 2023.

  • The faculty member will be a liaison between the students and leadership at Cornerstone Church and will offer training opportunities for staff as well as members of the congregation who participate in ministries of care (i.e., those focused on substance use but also those focused on broader psycho-social-spiritual concerns).

  • Students will earn 14-28 hours/week in their field placements for a total of 420 hours to complete an internship at Cornerstone (or in other settings once these are brought online) and will lead or participate in a variety of expected activities.

  • Specifically, students will help form and lead support groups consisting of families impacted by substance use and other stressors.
